Abstract
This article explores the complexities of transracial and transnational adoption, emphasizing the role of counselors in helping adoptees navigate the challenges they face. It highlights the increasing visibility of multiracial and multicultural families formed through adoption in the media, while also stressing the need for ethical oversight in adoption practices. The article acknowledges the traumatic nature of relinquishing a child for adoption and emphasizes the importance of listening to the perspectives of adoptees themselves. It provides recommendations for white adoptive parents on how to prepare for adopting a child of color, including addressing biases and creating a family action plan. The article also acknowledges the historical racism and corruption in adoption practices and calls for a comprehensive understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by transracial and transnational adoptees. It discusses the overrepresentation of children of color in the child welfare system and foster care, highlighting systemic inequalities in how families of color are policed in child rearing. The practice of transnational adoption has decreased globally due to corrupt practices and ethical violations in certain countries. Adoptees may experience mental health issues, grief and loss, and difficulties in establishing their racial or ethnic identity. Counselors are encouraged to become adoption-informed and educate themselves about the adoption process to better support this population. [Extracted from the article]
