Abstract
The article focuses on a report detailing the prevalence of suicidal ideation (SI) and non-fatal suicidal self-directed violence (SSDV) among Veterans residing in U.S. Pacific Island Territories, specifically Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa. The research, funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, surveyed 3,000 Veterans, with a 21.6% response rate, revealing that 35.86% reported lifetime SI and 15.68% reported SI in the past year. The study highlighted higher SI rates among younger Veterans aged 18-34 and American Indian/Alaska Native Veterans, while emphasizing the need for targeted suicide prevention efforts in these regions. The findings suggest that including these Veterans in suicide prevention research is crucial for effective intervention strategies. [Extracted from the article]
