Abstract

This systematic review focuses on the influence of adverse socioeconomic, psychosocial, biological, and behavioral factors throughout the life course on the likelihood of tooth loss. Analyzing 17 observational studies from multiple countries, the review found that individuals experiencing lifelong disadvantages—such as lower education, financial hardship, smoking, poor oral health behaviors, and limited dental care access—are more prone to tooth loss, particularly in middle and older adulthood. The findings highlight the importance of integrating social determinants into oral health strategies to reduce disparities and improve quality of life. The review underscores the need for comprehensive public health policies addressing these multifaceted factors from early life to promote healthier aging and mitigate oral health inequalities.
