Abstract
"The Consulting Trap: How Professional Service Firms Hook Governments and Undermine Democracy" is a meticulously researched critique of the consulting industry's impact on democratic decision-making and public administration. The authors provide detailed case studies that highlight the lack of transparency, accountability, and consultation with those affected by political decisions. The book also exposes the exorbitant fees charged by consultants and the sequestering of public knowledge for private profit. The authors argue that these practices have particularly detrimental effects on populations in the global South, perpetuating neo-colonial ideologies. The book concludes with examples of attempts to combat the consulting trap and promote more democratic governance. [Extracted from the article]
