Abstract
This article focuses on the application of systems thinking as a more effective innovation approach for addressing complex, interconnected challenges such as sustainability and climate change. It contrasts systems thinking with the more common breakthrough and design thinking methods, highlighting how the latter often overlook ripple effects and unintended consequences in complex systems. The article presents a four-step framework for systems thinking: defining a desired future state, iteratively reframing problems to engage diverse stakeholders, focusing on flows and relationships rather than discrete products, and implementing small nudges to gradually shift the system. Case studies from companies like Maple Leaf Foods, Co-operators Insurance, and the CSA Group illustrate how this approach can realign business models and ecosystems toward long-term resilience and sustainability.
