Abstract

The article discusses research on the dynamics of workplace friendships in relation to age, conducted by the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. The study explores how age influences workplace friendships through two competing theories: socioemotional selectivity theory, which suggests a positive relationship due to prioritization of socioemotional goals, and disengagement theory, which indicates a negative relationship due to late career disengagement. The research involved a field study with 902 employees and found that age is both positively and negatively associated with workplace friendship, moderated by the preference for friendship types. The findings contribute to the understanding of age-related processes affecting workplace relationships. [Extracted from the article]
