Abstract

This study investigates the interaction between punk culture in Istanbul, Turkey, and the music of NOFX, an influential American punk band known for its satirical and political lyrics. Using ethnographic methods and interviews with participants in the Istanbul punk scene, the research highlights how NOFX’s music reinforces punk’s role as a form of social criticism, identity construction, and cultural resistance within a local context shaped by political and social constraints. The DIY (do-it-yourself) ethos central to punk culture is shown to empower individuals and communities to challenge dominant social norms through music, fanzines, fashion, and independent cultural production. The 2007 NOFX concert in Istanbul is identified as a pivotal event that strengthened transnational connections and collective memory in the Turkish punk scene. Overall, the study presents punk not merely as a music genre but as a dynamic cultural practice that fosters political awareness, alternative identities, and ongoing negotiation with social structures.
