Abstract
This research investigates whether unconscious thought can adapt to new goals and make appropriate decisions when those goals change. Using experimental tasks involving judgments about mobile phones and scenic spots suitable for different age groups, the study found that participants engaging in unconscious thought adjusted their evaluations according to the new goals more effectively than those using conscious thought or making immediate decisions. The findings support the theory that unconscious thought is a flexible, goal-oriented process capable of re-weighting attributes based on changing objectives, rather than merely reflecting simultaneous judgments formed during information presentation. The study suggests further research is needed to explore unconscious thought's effectiveness over longer goal changes, with vague goals, and in real-world decision-making contexts.
