An Analysis of Selected Aspects of Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans.

Abstract

This article focuses on the examination of functional behavioral assessments (FBAs) and behavior intervention plans (BIPs) for students with disabilities within a large U.S. school district, analyzing the presence and quality of key compliance components in 304 FBA-BIP records. Findings revealed variability in the technical adequacy of FBA-BIP components, with lower quality observed in older grade levels and notable gaps in linking behavior hypotheses to intervention strategies. The study identified that clear hypotheses about behavior function and matching intervention strategies to these functions significantly predicted higher overall plan quality. The authors highlight the need for ongoing professional development, improved electronic record systems, and further research to enhance FBA-BIP implementation and ultimately support better student outcomes.
