Abstract

This article focuses on Penny Hooper MBCS, a cybersecurity professional and UN Women’s Delegate, sharing her personal experiences with neurodivergence, specifically selective mutism and autism. Selective mutism, an anxiety disorder affecting about one in 140 children and more common in girls and recent migrants, is often underdiagnosed in adults, as Hooper’s diagnosis came at age 30. She discusses the challenges of navigating professional life with both autism and selective mutism, highlighting the need for workplace accommodations that address difficulties in verbal communication beyond typical autistic traits. Hooper advocates for greater recognition and support for adults with selective mutism and plans to use her platform to raise awareness and influence policy.
