Abstract

This article explores the origins and cultural significance of Krampus, a demonic figure from Alpine Christmas folklore who punishes naughty children, contrasting with the gift-giving Saint Nicholas. While Krampus has become a modern horror icon in the United States through films and media, his traditional role in European festivals—especially the Krampus Runs on the Feast of Saint Nicholas—is deeply rooted in regional customs dating back centuries. The article also discusses the uncertain and debated origins of Krampus, including possible but unproven pagan connections, and compares him to similar figures like France’s Père Fouettard and the Welsh Mari Lwyd. Additionally, it highlights the craftsmanship of traditional Krampus masks and the figure’s evolving presence in contemporary culture and tourism.
