Abstract

The article reviews *'Am I Less British?' Racism, Belonging and the Children of Refugees and Immigrants in North London* by Doğuş Şimşek, which examines the identity formation of British Turkish and British Kurdish youths born to migrant parents in North London. Through ethnographic research, the book explores their experiences of racism, social hierarchies, and transnational interactions that shape their sense of belonging amid complex political and social tensions between Turkey and Britain. Şimşek challenges conventional concepts like "transnationalism" and "second generation," highlighting the fluid, often contradictory nature of these youths' identities as they navigate questions of Britishness, Turkishness, and Kurdishness. The work also addresses themes of home, cultural belonging, gender, language, and LGBTQ+ identities, offering nuanced insights into how these young people negotiate exclusion and solidarity within multiple social spheres.
