Abstract
This article examines the evolution of sociological research on marriage, children, and family published in the journal Social Forces over the past century. It highlights how family structures have shifted from socially prescribed companionate marriages to more individualized forms, with increasing scholarly focus on diverse family experiences, child well-being, and family complexity. The analysis identifies thematic changes across distinct eras, reflecting broader social transformations such as civil rights, gender equality, and demographic shifts, alongside methodological advances from case studies to large-scale longitudinal surveys. Recent research emphasizes global perspectives and diverse methods, illustrating how families both shape and are shaped by social forces including race, class, gender, and policy contexts.
