Abstract

The article examines the relationship between exposure to terror attacks from the Gaza Strip, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, cultural identities, and social support among immigrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) living near Gaza in Israel. Using a cross-sectional survey of 601 FSU immigrants, the study found that social support from both the immigrant group and the larger Israeli society buffered the impact of terror exposure on PTSD symptoms. Furthermore, immigrants' bicultural identity—comprising identification with and adherence to cultural practices of both their immigrant group and the larger society—predicted the social support they received from these groups. The findings suggest that fostering bicultural identity and ensuring immigrants' access to social resources from both cultural groups can enhance psychological resilience in life-threatening situations.
