Abstract
This article focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of an educational intervention aimed at hairstylists and barbers in Durban, South Africa, to improve early detection and referral of alopecia and scalp disorders, particularly scarring alopecias. The study found that a training seminar significantly increased participants' knowledge about these conditions, their awareness of central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, and their likelihood to refer clients to dermatologists. Given hairstylists' frequent contact with clients who may have limited access to dermatological care, especially women of color, the intervention shows promise as a cost-effective strategy to facilitate earlier diagnosis and treatment. The authors note that further research is needed to assess whether such training leads to increased medical consultations and improved clinical outcomes.
