The Association Between Racial Privilege and Ethnocultural Empathy.

This article investigates the relationships among racial privilege, ethnocultural empathy, and race within a diverse sample of 404 U.S. residents. Findings indicate that White participants exhibited higher levels of racial privilege but lower levels of ethnocultural empathy compared to Black participants, with these differences in empathy persisting even after statistically controlling for racial privilege. The study highlights that racial privilege and ethnocultural empathy vary across racial groups, but racial privilege itself does not directly influence ethnocultural empathy. These results contribute to understanding how race and social advantage intersect with empathic attitudes toward different ethnic and cultural groups, suggesting avenues for future research on factors fostering ethnocultural empathy beyond shared experiences of privilege or marginalization.
