Does Workplace Discrimination Contribute to Sex Work for Trans and Nonbinary Workers?

Abstract

The article focuses on the relationship between workplace discrimination and the engagement of transgender and nonbinary individuals in sex work, utilizing data from the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey (USTS). It finds that experiences of discrimination, such as being fired or denied employment due to one's gender identity, significantly increase the likelihood of engaging in sex work, particularly among trans women and nonbinary individuals compared to trans men. The study highlights that trans individuals of color face compounded barriers, with discrimination amplifying their risk of economic precarity and reliance on informal labor, including sex work. The findings underscore the need for enhanced workplace protections and anti-discrimination policies to support the economic security of trans workers. [Extracted from the article]
