Abstract
This study examines the relationship between migration and access to family planning services among Zimbabwean emigrants residing in South Africa, highlighting the multifaceted barriers and facilitators they encounter. Despite South Africa’s progressive health policies that legally entitle migrants to free family planning services, Zimbabwean migrants—particularly undocumented individuals—face significant challenges including legal and administrative hurdles, xenophobia, cultural distrust of South African contraceptives, language barriers, and economic constraints. The research, based on qualitative data from focus group discussions and key informant interviews analyzed through thematic content analysis using NVivo14, reveals that many migrants prefer obtaining contraceptives from Zimbabwe due to perceived socio-cultural and structural barriers in South Africa. The study recommends culturally sensitive healthcare provision, policy integration, community engagement, and targeted education campaigns to improve equitable access to reproductive health services for Zimbabwean migrants, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts between Zimbabwean and South African authorities, NGOs, and researchers.
