Abstract
This text reviews Frank W. Stahnisch's book *A New Field in Mind: A History of Interdisciplinarity in the Early Brain Sciences*, which examines how interdisciplinary collaborations between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries shaped the emergence of modern neurosciences. Drawing on archival research and case studies from German-speaking Europe and North America, the book highlights key figures such as neurologist Ludwig Edinger and neurophysiologist Kurt Goldstein, whose holistic approaches to brain injury and regeneration influenced later developments in brain science. Stahnisch argues that these early cross-disciplinary efforts were foundational to neuroscience, challenging the common view that the field originated primarily in 1960s American research. The study is recommended for scholars interested in neuroscience history, medicine, cultural history, and the evolution of scientific knowledge.
