Abstract

The Biden administration is imposing visa restrictions on hundreds of members of Nicaragua's government and sanctioning three entities in an effort to address the surge of illegal immigration. The US accuses Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega's government of exploiting vulnerable migrants by selling them visas that require them to leave the country within 96 hours. The US will also encourage airlines to identify smuggling routes and report suspicious activity. Nicaragua has become a transit country for migrants seeking to enter the US, exacerbating the border crisis. The US will continue to pressure Ortega to restore democratic norms and stop facilitating illegal migration. [Extracted from the article]
