Abstract
The article reviews two recent biographies focused on significant figures in Western American history. The first examines Merritt Dana Houghton, a prolific artist known for his bird's-eye views and illustrations of the Northern Rockies from 1878 to 1919, highlighting his role in regional place-making and commercial promotion through art. The second biography explores the early life of Marcus Daly, an influential Irish American mining baron who founded the Anaconda Company, tracing his migration, mining career, and rise in Montana's mining industry while addressing gaps in archival records. Both works contribute to understanding the cultural and economic development of the American West and are aimed at readers interested in Western art, history, and mining heritage.
