Abstract
Seattle is implementing new measures to crack down on drug use in an effort to address the city's drug crisis and revive its downtown area. The city is detaining more drug users, implementing special booking rules for the downtown area, and adopting a new loitering rule that allows judges to ban people arrested for drug-related crimes from certain areas. Other cities on the West Coast, such as San Francisco and Portland, are also taking more hardline tactics to combat the fentanyl epidemic. However, opponents argue that these measures infringe on civil liberties and make it harder for users to access services. The challenge lies in finding a balance between compassion for those suffering from addiction and public safety concerns. [Extracted from the article]
