Abstract

This article discusses ageism, which is defined as prejudice by one age group towards other age groups. The author highlights how society often uses negative language and stereotypes to describe older people, such as "burden" and "bed blockers." The media also tends to portray older adults in a negative light. The World Health Organization's Global Report on Ageism reveals that ageism is prevalent in low- and lower-middle-income countries, challenging the perception that more positive attitudes towards older adults are seen in non-Western cultures. The article emphasizes the importance of addressing ageism in healthcare settings through education and provides potential interventions to challenge ageist attitudes. The author also calls on educators to challenge negative narratives around age and aging for both older and younger people. [Extracted from the article]
