Abstract
The article focuses on the role of ethylene, a key plant hormone, in regulating flower senescence, particularly petal aging, through complex molecular, physiological, and genetic mechanisms. Ethylene-dependent petal senescence involves processes such as oxidative stress, protein and nucleic acid degradation, autophagy, and intricate crosstalk with other phytohormones including cytokinins, gibberellic acid, abscisic acid, auxin, polyamines, and nitric oxide. The regulation of senescence also encompasses epigenetic modifications like DNA methylation and histone changes, which influence gene expression during flower aging. Despite advances in understanding ethylene's role, significant gaps remain, highlighting the need for integrated molecular, genetic, and epigenomic approaches to better control flower longevity and improve crop quality.
