Abstract

The article focuses on challenges and proposed reforms in the peer review system of scientific publishing, emphasizing the need to improve quality and accountability while minimizing harm to authors. It critiques common practices such as double-blind review and reviewer anonymity, arguing these do not effectively address conflicts of interest or abusive behaviors. Key suggestions include adequately paying reviewers, implementing rigorous internal evaluation among editors and reviewers, and establishing a centralized, confidential global database to track editorial and review conduct for enhanced oversight. The article also discusses extending accountability mechanisms beyond peer review to areas like hiring references and teaching evaluations, advocating for systemic changes to foster fairness and transparency in academic processes.
