Abstract

The author seems to discount the possibility that the Chicano movement was influential; rather, she attributes opposition to busing to efforts to preserve "whiteness" and an emergent "colorblind" interpretation of the law. In one of the first extensions of school integration beyond the American South, the courts tried to integrate the schools via busing students, which would ultimately pit many former complainants against the integration plan.
