Abstract

The article focuses on the often-overlooked contributions of women in crime-fighting during the 19th century, as explored by Professor Sara Lodge in her book, *The Mysterious Case of the Victorian Female Detective*. Lodge reveals that women served as detectives both within police forces and as independent agents, often working undercover to investigate crimes such as adultery and theft. Despite their significant roles, these women were frequently unrecognized and underpaid, with many operating in anonymity. The article highlights the historical context and societal challenges these female detectives faced, as well as their impact on both real-life investigations and the portrayal of female detectives in Victorian fiction.
