Abstract
The article focuses on the political and social divisions in Midwestern communities, highlighting efforts to maintain neighborly connections despite deep ideological differences. It contrasts the experiences of longtime local Republicans, often economically struggling, with more recent, wealthier Democratic transplants involved in organic farming and remote work. Drawing on Beth Macy’s memoir *Paper Girl: A Memoir of Home and Family in a Fractured America*, the article explores how economic decline, loss of local institutions, and distrust of elites have fueled political alienation, conspiracy theories, and tribalism. Despite these challenges, the article emphasizes the importance of face-to-face community relationships as a source of hope and resilience amid a polarized national climate.
