Abstract

This article systematically reviews research on language testing and migration published between 2001 and 2022 within applied linguistics, focusing on the theoretical paradigms and methodological approaches employed. The study finds that literature in this domain predominantly adopts a critical paradigm, emphasizing power asymmetries and viewing language tests as gatekeeping tools, while showing less reliance on empirical, data-driven methods such as quantitative or qualitative analysis. The authors suggest that incorporating a broader range of theoretical perspectives and methodological reflexivity—including more empirical research involving stakeholders like test takers and policymakers—could enhance understanding and foster more effective research-policy collaboration in this contentious field.
