Abstract

This article focuses on research examining the challenges and adaptations involved in providing teletherapy to rural and remote communities in Alaska. The study, conducted with 26 licensed mental health clinicians from the University of Alaska Anchorage, used qualitative methods to explore critical events that shaped their teletherapy practices with patients in geographically and culturally diverse settings. Findings highlight the need for clinical training tailored to rural contexts and introduce the concept of "contextual humility," which emphasizes responsiveness to situational and environmental factors alongside cultural considerations. The research underscores the importance of integrating expanded teletherapy competencies to better address the unique clinical, ethical, technological, and administrative challenges faced in rural mental healthcare delivery.
