Abstract
"The New Real: Media and Mimesis in Japan from Stereographs to Emoji" by Jonathan E. Abel is a comprehensive exploration of Japanese media technology innovations in the twentieth century. Abel challenges the notion that new media technologies provide access to more immediate realities and radically transform human behavior. Through case studies and Japanese media debates, he argues for a reevaluation of mimesis as a concept metaphor for imitation and mediation.
