Abstract

This article examines how cemeteries, specifically Atan Cemetery in Yaba, Lagos, serve as heterotopic spaces that mirror and encapsulate the social, spatial, and historical realities of the urban environment. Drawing on Michel Foucault's theory of heterotopia and relational ontology of space, the study argues that cemeteries function as counter-sites where social categories such as class, gender, ethnicity, religion, and power are expressed and contested through spatial configurations and material culture. The spatial organization of Atan Cemetery—divided into general burial areas, private cemeteries, and military memorials—reflects the dualism and social stratifications found in Lagos cityscape, illustrating how urban social relations persist beyond life into death. Furthermore, the cemetery embodies heterochrony by accumulating layers of historical time, making it a pluriversal site that connects diverse social experiences and historical epochs within the metropolis.
