Abstract
The article focuses on the challenges and attitudes of companies in the optical industry toward sustainability, emphasizing the acceptance of imperfection as a catalyst for progress. It highlights the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which values simplicity and imperfection, as a useful framework for embracing gradual environmental improvements. The Duncan and Todd Group’s Caledonian Optical in Aberdeen is cited as an example of a business content with steady, realistic sustainability efforts rather than immediate perfection. The article encourages optical manufacturers, suppliers, and practices to adopt an open, iterative approach to sustainability, using imperfect experiences as learning opportunities. It also references kintsugi, the art of embracing imperfect repair, as a metaphor for ongoing environmental responsibility. [Extracted from the article]
