Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between parenting practices, children's self-esteem, and children's quality of life among 1,482 primary school students and their parents in Shanghai, China. Using structural equation modeling, the research found that positive parenting practices are associated with higher quality of life in children, while negative parenting practices correlate with lower quality of life. Importantly, children's self-esteem mediates these relationships, fully mediating the effect of positive parenting and partially mediating the effect of negative parenting on quality of life. The findings suggest that interventions aimed at enhancing positive parenting skills and boosting children's self-esteem could improve children's overall well-being in the Chinese context.
