Abstract
This article focuses on the practices, challenges, and possibilities of alternative and community media within contemporary communication landscapes. It highlights how these media serve as vital platforms for marginalized voices, civic participation, and cultural expression, despite facing financial precarity, regulatory pressures, and competition from dominant commercial platforms. The issue presents diverse case studies and theoretical approaches, including political economy typologies, volunteer motivations, audience engagement, sustainability strategies, and ethnographic research, illustrating how alternative and community media navigate structural constraints while fostering democratic engagement and social justice. Collectively, the contributions offer both academic insights and practical guidance for sustaining grassroots media initiatives globally.
