Abstract
The article focuses on a narrative review that examines the evolving role of representations—neural, mental, and computational constructs—in the fields of cybernetics, cognitive sciences, and artificial intelligence. It discusses the historical influence of cybernetics on the cognitive revolution and highlights three frameworks: cognitive maps in neuroscience, schemas in psychology, and object relations in psychodynamic theory. The review argues for the importance of flexible and context-sensitive representations in scientific practice, cautioning against equating engineering performance with theoretical adequacy. It emphasizes the need for transdisciplinary dialogue and ongoing negotiation in understanding representations, rather than viewing them as fixed entities. [Extracted from the article]
