Abstract
The author shares Cora Winona Faribault and her family's experiences of being incarcerated at Canton Asylum for Insane Indians through the historical sources and family memories shared by their descendant Faith O'Neil. Topics include the opening of the facility in South Dakota in 1902, the detention of Faribault's grandmother at the facility since 1915 and was forced to work there for years, and a discussion of the transinstitutionalization practice as reflected in Faribault's experiences.
