Abstract
This article examines how older lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) retirees are redefining healthy aging by choosing to age "out of place," often relocating to LGBT-friendly retirement communities or housing in countries such as France, Sweden, and Germany. It challenges dominant heteronormative models of "healthy aging in place," which assume safety and support within one's original home and community, by highlighting the unique needs of LGBT seniors who seek environments that affirm their sexual and gender identities and provide emotional and physical safety. Drawing on qualitative interview data and standpoint theory, the study reveals that for many LGBT retirees, migration is not merely a lifestyle choice but a necessary strategy to maintain authenticity, intimacy, and wellbeing in later life. The findings underscore the importance of recognizing diverse aging experiences and the limitations of conventional aging paradigms that overlook marginalized populations.
