Abstract
The article focuses on the importance of two distinct types of workplace respect—owed respect, which is accorded equally to all employees, and earned respect, which recognizes individual achievements—in fostering employee engagement and organizational success. Drawing on a 15-month study of Televerde, a business-to-business marketing firm employing female prison inmates, it illustrates how consistent practices of both respect types contribute to high employee motivation, reduced recidivism, and strong company growth. The article outlines seven practical strategies for leaders to effectively convey respect, emphasizing that respect is a fundamental, universal need that supports identity development, job satisfaction, and performance across diverse work environments.
