Abstract

This article examines the distribution, management, and guest experiences of homestays in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) as a sustainable tourism alternative that supports local economies, culture, and environment. Data from popular travel booking sites reveal that Himachal Pradesh hosts the highest number of homestays (968), while Tripura has the fewest (3), with Jammu and Kashmir's homestays receiving the highest guest ratings. The study finds no significant difference in hospitality quality between rural and urban homestays across key parameters such as cleanliness, staff behavior, comfort, facilities, and value for money. It highlights government incentives and policies promoting homestay tourism, identifies challenges like poor infrastructure and community participation, and suggests that targeted local policies and increased investment could enhance sustainable homestay development in the region.
