Abstract
This article focuses on developing ethical and accountable habits of mind for songwriters and songwriting educators to address cultural appropriation in creative practice. It emphasizes the importance of critical self-reflection, positioning oneself in relation to musical lineages, fostering cultural humility, and adopting a disposition toward compensation when drawing from minoritized musical traditions. Through examples from popular music and classroom experiences, the authors advocate for prioritizing cultural exchange over cultural exploitation and encourage ongoing dialogue about power dynamics, reciprocity, and accountability in songwriting pedagogy. The article proposes instructional strategies to help aspiring songwriters engage thoughtfully and ethically with diverse musical influences in a globalized cultural landscape.
