Abstract

This article focuses on the interdisciplinary collaboration between American filmmaker and visual artist Andrew Thomas Huang and British filmmaker Wukda in creating the short film *Arif* for the MUNCH Museum in Oslo. The film explores the multicultural narrative of Norwegian rapper Arif, linking his Zanzibar heritage with contemporary Norwegian hip hop through surreal, non-linear storytelling and symbolic motifs such as the seashell. Drawing inspiration from Edvard Munch’s themes and personal histories within diasporic contexts, the filmmakers emphasize authenticity by shooting on location in Oslo and Zanzibar and addressing complex cultural and historical layers, including the African diasporic relationship to water. The film is presented in dual formats for both exhibition and festival contexts, aiming to engage diverse audiences through a hybrid of short film, music video, and art film.
