Abstract
This article examines the differing social service needs of violently injured youth and young adults (YYAs, defined as individuals aged ≤24 years) compared to older adults admitted to a level I trauma center. The study found that YYAs experience higher rates of firearm injury but report less socioeconomic disadvantage than older patients. While both groups showed similar overall interest in hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP) services, YYAs were nearly three times more likely to request non-financial services such as mental health, peer support, and legal assistance rather than financial aid. These findings suggest that HVIPs should prioritize non-financial support tailored to YYAs to effectively address their unique risk factors and reduce the likelihood of repeat violent injury.
