Abstract

This article examines the impact of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) on mathematics anxiety among Nigerian secondary school students. In a randomized controlled trial involving 86 senior secondary one students, those who received a 12-session MBCT intervention over six weeks showed a significant reduction in mathematics anxiety compared to a control group receiving conventional counselling, with effects sustained at a 12-week follow-up. The study highlights MBCT's potential to help students manage negative thought patterns and emotional responses related to mathematics, recommending that teachers and school counsellors be trained to apply MBCT techniques to support anxious students. These findings contribute to the growing evidence supporting MBCT as an effective psychological intervention for reducing mathematics anxiety in diverse educational contexts.
