Abstract
The article focuses on local and university-level activism in the United States advocating for divestment from Israel due to alleged human rights violations against Palestinians. It details Portland, Maine's City Council unanimous vote to divest municipal funds from Israeli government-linked entities, despite the city not currently holding such investments, as a symbolic stance against what supporters describe as genocide and apartheid. In Alexandria, Virginia, residents and the Alexandria for Palestinian Human Rights collective have urged the City Council to divest from companies profiting from Israel's actions and to support a Gaza ceasefire, but the council has so far declined to act on these recommendations. The article also highlights the University of Maryland Students for Justice in Palestine chapter's legal victory against the university's cancellation of an interfaith vigil, emphasizing issues of free speech and alleged institutional bias. These cases illustrate ongoing grassroots efforts to influence local policies and university decisions related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
