Abstract
This article examines the role of Claudia Jones, a Black Communist and activist, and the West Indian Gazette and Afro-Asian-Caribbean News (WIG) newspaper in shaping a new Black radicalism in the UK and US during the mid-20th century. Jones, deported from the US in 1955, brought a U.S. Black Left tradition of institution-building and intersectional analysis of race, class, and gender to Britain, using WIG as a platform to foster Black political solidarity, cultural expression, and internationalist connections among Afro-Caribbean migrants and broader Black diasporic communities. WIG served as a crucial medium linking Black radical ideas and cultural movements across the Atlantic, influencing the development of Black Power and Black Arts in the UK while reinforcing transnational Black internationalism rooted in anticolonial struggles. The article highlights Jones's leadership within the Communist Party USA, her marginalization by the British Communist Party, and her lasting impact on Black British cultural institutions, including the Notting Hill Carnival and the Caribbean Artists Movement, situating her work within broader Cold War-era dynamics of race, politics, and culture.
