Abstract
The article focuses on the history and evolution of coin-operated video gaming machines, particularly during their peak popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. It describes how amusement arcades, which originated from earlier mechanical gaming machines, became vibrant social spaces filled with colorful video game cabinets, attracting many young gamers. The introduction of the Japan Amusement Machinery Manufacturers Association (JAMMA) standard in 1985 revolutionized arcade gaming by allowing easier game changes through standardized motherboards, enhancing the economic viability of arcade operations. However, by the late 1990s, the rise of home gaming consoles and personal computers led to a decline in arcade popularity, despite the unique atmosphere they provided. [Extracted from the article]
