Abstract
The article focuses on the advantages for companies that intentionally integrate health, safety, and mental well-being initiatives, highlighting the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Total Worker Health® program. Total Worker Health® combines protection from work-related hazards with promotion of injury and illness prevention to advance worker well-being, supported by tools like the NIOSH Well-Being Questionnaire (WellBQ) and organizational scorecards such as the HERO Health and Well-being Best Practices Scorecard. Research emphasizes balancing individual lifestyle interventions with environmental and policy changes, reflecting frameworks like the Socio-Ecological Model and PRECEDE/PROCEED. Despite evidence showing integrated programs improve employee health outcomes and reduce risks, many organizations underutilize such comprehensive approaches. The article also discusses ongoing debates about prioritizing individual versus social responsibility for health and advocates for using scientific evidence and humility in evolving workplace health strategies.
