Abstract

This article provides a concise overview of the life and work of T.J. Starker, an influential Oregon forester. Starker played a significant role in the development of forest science and practices in the Douglas fir region during the early 20th century. He advocated for selective logging practices that encouraged natural regrowth, which put him at odds with movements to stop logging on old-growth forests. Today, Starker Forests, Inc. manages over 90,000 acres of forest land in western Oregon, and the Starker family continues to support local civic organizations and sponsor the Starker Lecture Series at Oregon State University.
