Abstract

The article focuses on Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage site in southern Alberta, Canada, recognized as one of the oldest and best-preserved buffalo jumps used by Indigenous Peoples for over 6,000 years. This site exemplifies a sophisticated hunting method where bison were driven over cliffs, providing essential resources for the Plains Peoples’ survival and culture. Archaeological findings reveal extensive use and evolving hunting techniques, while the on-site interpretive centre offers educational exhibits, guided tours led by local Indigenous guides, and cultural programs that celebrate Indigenous heritage. Preservation efforts involve collaboration among Indigenous communities, archaeologists, and government agencies to protect the site and promote awareness of its historical and cultural significance.
